Method

How the loss budget is calculated

Total link loss is the sum of all loss contributors: fiber attenuation (dB/km × length in km), plus connector insertion loss per mated pair, plus splice loss, plus any passive component loss.

Total loss = Σ(fiber dB/km × km) + Σ(connectors × dB each) + Σ(splices × dB each) + Σ(components)

The available margin = System budget − Total link loss. A positive margin means the link should work. A margin below 3 dB is typically considered insufficient for production installations.

Typical reference loss values

OS2 SM: 0.35 dB/km at 1310 nm, 0.20 dB/km at 1550 nm. OM3/OM4 MM: 3.5 / 3.0 dB/km at 850 nm. LC/SC connector pair: 0.3 dB (IEC 61753). Fusion splice: 0.1 dB budget. Mechanical splice: 0.3 dB budget. MPO connector: 0.5 dB budget.

Margin

Why a 3 dB safety margin?

The 3 dB margin accounts for connector degradation, patch cord aging, bending, reflections, measurement uncertainty, and future splices or repairs. Some standards recommend 3 dB minimum, critical links may use 6 dB.

Fiber loss budget planning notes

What is a fiber loss budget?

A loss budget is the maximum allowable total optical power loss from transmitter to receiver. The system budget = Tx min power − Rx sensitivity. If total link loss stays below this value (with margin), the link will work reliably.

How many connectors should I budget per link?

A typical structured cabling link has 4 to 6 mated connector pairs: patch cord at each end plus patch panel connections. Add 1 pair per intermediate splice or distribution point. Count actual mated pairs — every physical connection is a pair.

Should I use UPC or APC connectors?

APC (angled) connectors reduce back-reflection, important for long-haul SM links and analog video. UPC is standard for most data centre and LAN applications. Do not mix APC and UPC in the same link — the physical angled / flat mating causes high loss and possible damage.

Can multimode fiber reach 1 km?

Standard OM3/OM4 at 850 nm supports up to 300–400 m for 10G and up to 550 m for some standards. For distances beyond 500 m, use single-mode OS2 fiber instead. OM5 adds SWDM support at 953 nm but does not significantly extend reach at 850 nm.

Does this replace an OTDR measurement?

No. This calculator is a pre-installation planning tool. An OTDR measures actual installed fiber loss and identifies faults, splice locations, and reflections. Always use an OTDR and optical power meter at acceptance testing.
